While stationed in England, he met and married his wife, the fonner Marie Stack. As an avionics maintenance specialist, he served in South East Asia during the Viet Nam War.

He worked in the PMEL lab at Vandenberg Air Force Base until his retirement in 2004.

Dean Higgins' eulogy
2nd November 2007
I am Christine Talbot and I am married to Peter who is Marie's cousin. It is a privilege to be asked to give this eulogy.
It is difficult to summarize 74 years of a life in such a short space of time, but we shall try.
Dean grew up on a farm in South Dakota, the eldest of three boys. During the two years following high school, Dean realized that in order to live the life he dreamed of, it would require leaving the familiar area he had always known as home.
He joined the United States Air Force in 1953 and whilst stationed in England he married Marie in 1957. Peter was best man at the wedding, which was the commencement of a lifelong friendship which included Peter's parents Win and Freddie. Many happy times were spent together, sometimes playing cards to the early hours. This was a very happy period and Dean charmed everyone with his easygoing style, humor, enthusiasm and sincerity.
Dean and Marie were blessed with two lovely daughters Karen and Michelle and during his 23 years military service, which included South East Asia during the Vietnam War, they traveled to many places finally settling down in California in 1976. Amongst his many interests Dean was a keen student of military history and loved to debate World War Two and its Generals.
Dean was always counting the blessings of his life and often gave sincere thanks from the heart of a man of strong Catholic faith.
His heart was full of love for his beloved wife and daughters. It was his mission in life to make sure that they were taken care of and their needs were met. He could count on a large circle of extended family and friends and was always ready to help anyone in need.
Everyone who knew Dean remembers him as a person who could just about fix anything and one of his favorite activities was working on car engines. One time in the early years of his marriage Marie was returning home on a cold winter's night in England. She entered the house to find Dean and two other men working to repair an automobile engine - which was sitting on the kitchen table.
He seemed to open his heart wider than ever when the grandchildren were born. Thereafter he became "Grand-Dean" to his five grandchildren.
Dean was known by his family and friends as a gentle man who will always be loved and remembered for a firm handshake, a friendly smile and a twinkle in his eye.

GERALDINE HIGGINS
AGE 72 YEARS
DIED DECEMBER 14, 2002
Geraldine Higgins, a 37 - year newsroom veteran, died Saturday after a short battle with cancer. She was 72 . Higgins began her newspaper career at the St. Cloud Daily Times in 1965, where she worked her way up from obituary writer to managing editor. She joined the St. Paul Pioneer Press in 1972 but maintained a home and a farm with her husband, Vernon, in St Cloud. She lived in St Paul during the weekand spent weekends bailing hay on the farm. A mother of four, Higgins learned early how to juggle her personal and professional lives. While working as a city editor in St Cloud, a story came across her desk about the city's first rock concert, which attracted more than 1,000 teens to a field. That field was Higgins back yard. But she edited the story before going home to lecture her daughter Jane. Getting a story past Higgins was often a reporter's biggest challenge. "She kept people on their toes," said her supervisor, Art Coulson, senior editor of the Pioneer Press' suburban team. "She was tough, very task oriented," said Becky Welter, longtime Pioneer Preess co-worker. "She didn't allow extranenous things to interfere with work. She loved her job. "She was a stickler for facts but Higgins did have a soft side in the newsrooom, taking newcomers under her wing and showing them the ropes. Everone was "kid" to Higgins - even editors. When Welter asked her a couple of years ago why she didn't retire, Higgins Quipped, "What am I going to do, get on a tour bus and see a monument?" On Saturday , the papers were still piled on her desk. "She never backed down," Welter said.
In addition to her husband, Vernon, Geraldine is survived by children: Jane roberts and Dennis Higgins of St Cloud, Tom Higgins and his wife Marivic of St Paul and Kathleen Sanchez and her husband Eric of France, and siblings Thomas Pflepsen and his wife Leona of St Paul, NE., Sylvia Taft and her husband Denis of Kent, WA., Jacqueline Hosking and her husband Gary of Medford, OR., Rosalia Wright-Pflepsen of Santa Rosa, CA., and Kathleen Lansing of of Stevens Point, WI. Six grandchildren: Dominique, Alexis, Yarra, Tristan, Sean and Abigail and a great grandchild Skyla also survive her.
Funeral servicses will be10:30 AM on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002 at St Augustine's Catholic Church in St Cloud, MN. The Rev Geoffrey Fecht, OSB will officiate. Francis is doing fine as he said [for a 95 year old kid ] walks 6 to 12 blocks a day and to church, walks fast too bent over a little . He was sitting in his chair and wanted to show me his wrap on his ankle and he raised his knee right up to his chin to show us so he is very limber. He lives in apartment where he can get assistance if he needs but he cooks for him self . He still can rattle off all the presidents in order and if you stop him as he is doing it he can tell you were you are at that president when he was in office and out and birth and death and than he will go on from there , he also can recite all the 105 counties of state Kansas and knows all county seats and most the county seat addresses, unbelievable the memory he has. I want to get back this summer and get it on video and spend time , going over things , one of his old neighbors and his wife are in the same apartment house so we always stop and see them they known family sense 30s so lot history there , he know his dad and mom , the neighbors lived across road from them .

Note: Letter received from Mary G. Lynch Cody
Tomorrow is my birthday (July 2). It used to be the Visitation and that is why I'm called Mary.
I didn't drown when we had the big rain in Atlantic on June 14th. I didn't even have water in the furnace room - although one didn't have to go too far into water, and some of it was very bad.
One of my earliest memories was when I was 3 or 4 and it was at Uncle Barney's wake when we lived in Grand Junction. I think it must have been in 1924, and I think on the family tree they have that he died in 1892. That can't be because of the times his picture is in family picture.
I think Mom used to tell us that the baby buried in their family plot was from another Higgins family, but I really don't remember the story anymore. I know that Uncle Barney died at St. Bernard Home in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
I see in your Family Tree that one of your grils is married to a Felts. One of my favorite teachers that we had in Grand Junction was Mr. Felts. I know he moved to Sioux City, from Grand Junction and later died of cancer. He was our principal and basketball coach. I don't remember his first name and just Mr Felts.
In our Diocese we have a priest, Fathet Ray Higgins. I invited himto come to the reunion. He is the pastor at Perry, Iowa. His uncle Francis is a priest in the Sioux City Diocese. I haven't heard back from him. He spent some time here in Alantic before he became a priest. I've always thought that his uncle looked like a family member.
As we are about to leave the farm,
We began to reminisce of thoughts so warm.
So many memories beyond compare;
We'ad like to let you in on a share.
We have lived here all our married life, it's true,
And because of this, we want to send a big thanks to you.
George rented part of this farm in 1936, from Mr Poterfield.
With horses, he plowed and planted, in hope for a crop to yield.
Then an important day in George's life,
Was August 9, 1939, he took Mary for his wife.
February 21, 1940, they moved into this home;
To settledown, no more to roam.
This was a start of a life so new;
When we first began to get acquinted with you.
It was here great events took place,
Sometimes a smile and sometimes a frown on our face.
Then on February 22, 19 hundred and forty-one,
We became the parents of a son.
Francis George was the name we gave to him,
No doubt about it, we thought he was a gem.
February 14, 1942 our hearts were set awhirl,
God presented us with our baby girl.
Mary Rosella was to be her name,
She made life a delightful game.
With these two to complete our family tree,
And this farm, we were very happy, tou see.
Now as our thoughts strolled on down memory lane,
One of our first thoughts was of Mayme.
She always loved this home, init many problems we did discuss,
She is the one who made sure there was apple trees for us.
The children loved these apple trees;
They would eat them by twos and threes.
Francis always headed for the apple tree when it was time to chore,
and fill his pockets with three or four.
We can see the smile on the children's faces still;
When a Hershey candy bar was handed to them from Will.
Many changes have taken place on this farm, since our first day;
For instance, remember all the trees we have cleared away.
A great big help came to our door,
When we got electricity in 1944.
We can remember that first delightful night,
When in every room we could turn on a light.
Another thing as we stroll down memory lane,
Was when Albert put in our tile and drain.
Then the day our steel cribs came into view,
All because of the help of you.
We have always loved our great big yard;
And found it restful after a day's work so hard.
We liked living close to town,
With a good road, the trips were sound.
These are a few of the things we have brought to mind,
There are many more memories we could find.
Our children grew up on this farm;
Their memories are so warm.
They have graduated from school and left home,
And now have families of their own.
Francis graduated and took Marilyn for his wife;
Richy, Ronnieand Michelle have come into his life.
Rosella graduated and married Joe in 1961,
And now are the parents of two sons.
Rick and Don are Rosellas boys,
Coming to this farm each summer they shure do enjoy.
So you see this farm has great sentiment;
Leaving it is a brand new event.
We are looking for a different house to live;
We hope pleasant memories from it God will give.
But before we leave, we want to say;
Thank you all in every way.
We hope Will, Dorthy, Albert, and Donald and all your families,
That God will send happiness into your farily trees.
May God bless all your homes with faith, hope and love;
Daily end his blessing from His homg above.
May all the love and joy you have sent our way,
Be enjoyed by all your families for many a day.
So as we make a big jump and move into town,
Find us a new home and get all settled.
Ther's one thing we both want to shout,
To all of you Hamiltons the welcome mat is out.
I am going to try to finish up my story today. We had our farm sale December 9, 1967. Moved to Jefferson (IA) to 714 South Oak. George worked at several factories, but he wanted to get in to American. His prayers were finally answered, and he got a job at American. He mostly worked on weaving trampolines. He even made one for Jackie Kennedy. We enjoyed our new neighborhood. George became ill in the Fall of 1971, but we didn't find out that he had cancer until January 16, 1972. It had already spread to his liver. We went to Iowa City in February, but there was nothing that could be done. He died May 30, 1972. I lived in our home until the Fall of 1977. I sold the house an moved to an apartment. I lived there until February, 1980, and then I moved to a smaller apartment. A new addition to our family was Mary Jo on April 9, 1968. Then Randall arriver the night Richard was graduating from 8th grade on May 24, 1978.
I finally decided the drives out to Francis were getting too long, so I moved to Atlantic (IA) in September of 1983. I lived in an apartment until February, 1987. Rick and Joellen came for a visit and helped me move. Then in February, 1996, I moved to a house next door to the parking lot of St. Peter and Paul Church here in Atlantic. With lots of family help, the move was made. This is supposed to be my final move.
I now have six great grandchildren. Richard has three: Justin 14, Jesse 11, John almost 9. Mary Jo has Dustin who will be 11 on August 23, and Don's two boys: Drew 8 and Jordan 4. I am looking for Rick and Joellen from Lincoln (NE). They plan to come out for the reunion. Don, Deleene and the boys plan to come from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
I had a stroke April 8, 1997. I fell on the kitchen floor and couldn't get up. I finally got myself to the living room in the morning and reached the telephone to call 911. I spent the next three weeks inthe hospital. I got over the stroke pretty well.
I have been so fatigued this spring. I take blood pressure medicine, and they haven't decided if that is the cause. My pulse rate drops to 40, average 50. Hope to find some get up and go. Also taking treatments on my neck.
Plans are being made for Randall and Lynne to be married October 24, in Maryville, Missouri.
I try to go to Mass everyday. Monday we have a 5:30 p.m. Mass; Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9:00a.m.; Thursday there is none. Thursday is my 77th birthday, so expect some of my grandchildren in.
